The Importance of STEM Education

How important is STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Education?

30 years ago, when I was in high school, there were few computers and no computer science classes.  I had to work with my foreign language teacher to help set up a computer lab and help him teach an introduction to programming class.  In all this time, have we come very far?

We still don’t have enough computer science and technology classes at our middle and high schools.  My background as an engineering professional demonstrated to me that we need to have classes, clubs, field trips, and guest speakers to show students what engineering careers look like.  And, since computers are pervasive in our society, those who aren’t interested in engineering careers should still have the opportunity to learn the basics of writing software and how computers work.  At all levels of our schools, there needs to be more access to science, technology, engineering and math with an emphasis on its relevance to careers.
